Firefighter specialist in aquatic rescue, Sergeant Benedetto Eduardo Lima gives tips to avoid drowning: “Don't swim in an unknown place and without a lifeguard. In 80% of drowning cases there was no rescuer present. When this is the case, you should look for signage in the place. Avoid swimming alone and never jump into the water, as there is no way to know the depth outside. Recognize the river or pond and enter the water up to your navel. Avoid drinking alcohol before swimming.”
Actor Domingo's Montagne drowned after entering a whirlpool in the São Francisco River, in Sergipe. Regarding the whirlpools, the sergeant explains that, often, the water is apparently calm, which makes it difficult to perceive it from the outside, if they are present. When entering a whirlpool, one has to try to keep calm and head out of the water. It is also necessary to try to float on the surface and wait for the current itself to throw you out of the whirlpool. When you feel that you are out of danger, it is necessary to swim towards the bank in the direction of the river flow, transversal to the current, guides the firefighter.
Benedetto Lima gives other essential guidelines:
Don't eat before swimming. "When swimming after eating, blood pools in the stomach and extremities, arms and legs, decreasing irrigation in the head." This lack, popularly known as "congestion", generates a faint, which will lead the person to sink. “When the body stops after fainting, the blood returns to the brain, and the person regains consciousness by trying to breathe in. As it is underwater, the lung will fill with fluid. If he survives, he may have pneumonia and neurological sequelae”, he warns.
RESCUE It also gives important rescue tips:
“Throw an object, preferably floating, such as a buoy or Styrofoam box for the person to hold on to and be pulled to shore. If not, use a stick, pants or rope. Never make bodily contact with the person who is drowning, as they may despair and cling to whoever is saving them, causing both of them to sink,” he says. Meanwhile, someone should call 911 and call the Fire Department. If the rescue fails, the firefighter is already on his way”, explains Sergeant Benedetto.
If the person, when pulled out of the water, is unconscious, it will be necessary to revive him. For this, according to him, 30 heart massages are needed, interspersed with two mouth-to-mouth breaths. Repeat the sequence until you revive her and, if you get tired, switch with someone. For the massage, interlace the fingers of the hand and give quick, strong compressions on the chest, between the nipples with Lifeguard training miami usa. While this is done, someone should call the fire department, if you are alone, call first before doing the rescue, alerts the firefighter.
